    RWI / Phonics

    What is Phonics?

RWI Phonics is the phonics program that we use to teach our pupils sounds and how to blend these sounds into words. Pupils in reception are taught set 1 sounds (single letter sounds) and will then progress to set 1 special friends (sounds that contain 2 letters). Throughout KS1, pupils are taught set 2 and set 3 sounds and begin reading longer words. Our pupils are assessed every half-term and put into the appropriate group for their reading level. For those pupils who are not on track, we offer daily interventions to help them keep up with their peers. At the end of year 1, pupils will take the Phonics Screening Check (PSC) to assess their sound knowledge by reading 40 words. By the end of KS1, we aim for our pupils to be off the program, having been taught all of the key skills needed to be able to decode an given word.
